What I know for sure is that Melissa would have hosted all of us this past Sunday for the Superbowl and the party would still be going on all the way to the Parade. Melissa and I, really the Savage and the Anthony families moved onto 96th Street in 1996 on the same day. We the later moved to the same street in Somerset acres. Those early years with babies and toddlers, Melissa was a great friend to lean on. We would watch the kids for each other and help juggle the early years. Those days evolved into “neighborhood gatherings” on weekend nights where the kids played in the basement while we were “adulting” to the wee hours and the kids would all have a slumber party. Those days them turned into trips we took together, kids growing through high school and then college and many life changes. David, Melissa and then Caroline shared a birthdays…another amazing reason for us to all gather.
My most endearing memories are Melissa’s warm smile. It was inviting and genuine and she was a true friend for life. I just did not know it would be so short. She and I could laugh together until we cried and we did this often. We all had a penchant for good wine and would gather with Chef Peter Hahn at the Raphael for wine pairings and Ying and Yang tastings (wines that complement and contrast each course). A great dinner we had at the cellar in Beringer in Napa was a night we will always remember.
What I know for sure is that those are the things that make me smile when I think of Mel. Still a forever friend, Happy Birthday month, I miss you to the moon and back!
