Summertime meant Milburn swim meets, and the fun and shenanigans always included Melissa! I met her years ago when my kids were in middle school. The second season we swam at Milburn, Melissa and I were the swim chairs! I remember she was so good with the coaches! She knew how to help plan the meets so that all parents and kids would be happy! She knew every kid by name and I loved how she called my son Christopher by his nickname “Critter” even after only knowing him a short while. I can still hear her calling him that!
The coaches were all college age kids! They were so fun and always went the extra mile for the team! Melissa, being the fun rebel she was, would sneak the coaches shots in the old women’s changing room by the pool. After all, they worked hard, they deserved to have some fun. Never one to have a problem defying authority, I helped her sneak them into the locker room. After hours of dancing and fun, it was time for the coaches to leave. As we waited in the parking lot to make sure they had a safe ride home, our girl coach was getting her clothes on over her suit to leave. We looked in the car and she had a white polo shirt and a pair of khaki shorts on that were clearly over-sized! She was completely dressed in her co-chair’s male clothing. She had no clue that was not what she wore to the meet! We laughed about that little secret for days! Soo much fun for everyone.
The best memory of all was how Melissa never met a stranger! She was the best at welcoming everyone to the group at Milburn. Always extending an invitation or chair to make people feel welcome and comfortable, including myself. She was confident, adventurous and just plain fun! She would love how her own children continue to exemplify that!
Having a shot for you Melissa! (all join if want!)
Love,
Julie
